Identity and Disguises: The Female Gender in Chivalric Romance
In chivalric romances, female figures take on various identities beyond that of the beloved woman who inspires the knight’s deeds. Women take the initiative as lovers, warriors, Amazons, seductive maidens, and enchanting sorceresses. Disguises allow for the reinterpretation of gender roles through deceptions that complicate the plot and enrich it with ambiguities, allusions, and elements of transgression and comedy.
