Tirant lo Blanch, Mambriano, Francesco Cieco da Ferrara, Gonzaga, literary relations between Italy and Iberian PeninsulaAbstract
The first trace of Tirant lo Blanch reading at Northern Italian courts occurred in December 1500, when Isabella d’Este, marchioness of Mantua, asked her relative Antonia del Balzo of Bozzolo to lend Martorell’s novel, which she had recently obtained in Naples. Far before the further overflowing of Italo-Hispanic prints, this circumstance exemplified the predisposition of the courts to receive a diversified array of chivalric works, even more than conventional ones, which were susceptible to be reinterpreted by courtesan poets inclined to satisfy their lords condottieri always desirous of chivalresque samples. The Mambriano of Francesco Cieco da Ferrara may have represented a case of openness to latest Iberian romances, since Tirant lo Blanch would have provided the ferrarese with an inventory of formulas and emblematic actions all the time that he needed attractive auctoritas, in order to captivate his master Francesco II Gonzaga.
