The novels of chivalry, Don Quixote and the practice of reading

Abstract

These reflections aim to study the importance of Don Quixote in the evolution of the concept and of the modes of reading, drawing a comparison with the reception of the chivalric novels. The chivalric genre represented in the sixteenth century an important step towards the triumph of private and silent reading. Cervantes in his novel explores different modes of reading, from reading aloud to a group of listeners, to silent reading. Don Quixote fictionalizes in its plot not only the process of literary composition, but also the reception of the novel.

Estas reflexiones se proponen estudiar la importancia del Quijote en la evolución de la concepción y de las modalidades de lectura, estableciendo una comparación con la recepción de los libros de caballerías. El género caballeresco representó, en el siglo XVI, un estímulo importante hacia el triunfo de la lectura privada. Cervantes en su novela explora modalidades de lectura diferentes, a partir de la lectura a viva voz ante un grupo de oyentes, hasta la lectura silenciosa a solas. El Quijote noveliza no solo el proceso de creación y composición literaria, sino también su misma recepción.
