This article presents a project to study and catalogue comic motifs in the romances of chivalry; the motif represents a small narrative unit that occurs with certain frequency in the tradition, acquiring an identity of its own and becoming recognizable in different contexts. Through the analysis of some comic situations of the Italian chivalric cycle of the Palmerines, it is possible to propose a first classification of some potential comic motifs, discussing, at the same time, some of the methodological issues that require consideration.
