Abstract

The chivalrous substratum of Luis Vélez de Guevara's theater is analyzed based on some characteristic and defining elements: the concealment of the knight, the exercise of virtue, the defense of the honor of a falsely accused lady, the combats, the enchantments, the fight against serpents and lions and, finally, the allusions to books of chivalry, including the burlesque ones. The abundant presence of these elements in many of his works is a sign of the preference for this theme, of its use for the praise of a certain class and of ironic criticism due to the distance between the ideal andante and the patent reality.
