Abstract

This article focuses on the depiction of the female devil in medieval Castilian chivalric literature. Synthesising the medieval origins and development of women as a demonic disguises that tempts and attracts men through its erotic appeal, it examines three texts situated in a stage prior to the development of the Castilian chivalric romances: Libro del caballero Zifar, Tristán de Leonís and Amadís de Gaula. Finally, it considers whether the figure of the female devil survived in the Castilian chivalric romances, or whether it disappeared in the face of other female types also situated on the margins of society.
