Translation of the article «Balzac Seen by a Foreign Critic, Ernst Robert Curtius» which appeared in the Balzac Review / Revue Balzac journal. The content of Curtius’ monograph on Balzac is taken up to identify an aspect underestimated by critics, mainly focused on the documentary realism of the French author. Through the rereading of Curtius, the ability of Balzac to represent human passions and the inner and spiritual movements of characters is pointed out.
